Traveling Through Botswana's Red Zones

There is a rhythm to traveling in Botswana—a dance between green zones and red, where the land itself guides what may pass. Understanding these gentle boundaries helps your journey flow without interruption.

Botswana is mostly green, free from foot and mouth disease, except for the Ngamiland / North-West District—the very region that cradles the Okavango Delta. This is a red zone. Most travelers heading into the Delta will pass through it, and we are here to help you navigate with ease.

Entering the Red Zone

When you travel from a green zone into the red, you are welcome to bring:

  • Poultry

  • Beef

  • Processed meat products

  • Processed dried meat products

  • Cooked meat

Exiting the Red Zone

When you leave the red zone and return to green, the land asks that you carry only certain things. Raw products from cloven-hooved animals—beef, lamb, mutton, pork, and game meat—may not cross back.

Instead, you may carry processed meats such as:

  • Biltong

  • Bacon

  • Ham

  • Spareribs

Poultry and fish, however, are free to travel wherever your journey takes you.

Checkpoint Information

Along the way, you will find veterinary checkpoints at the edges of the red zone—quiet places where boots are wiped clean and coolers are gently checked. These are moments of care for the land and its animals.

Common checkpoints include:

  • Makalamabedi Gate – from Serowe, Letlhakane, or Rakops

  • Checkpoint after Kuke – from Namibia

During times of foot and mouth outbreaks, additional checkpoints may appear—a gentle reminder of the living landscape you are moving through.

Traveling to Chobe / Kasane

If you are traveling from Maun to Kasane along the tar road, the same restrictions on cloven-hooved animals apply. But if your path winds through Moremi, Savute, or Chobe—following the ancient rhythms of the wild—you may carry any meat products your journey requires.

Crossing from South Africa into Botswana

If you are crossing the border from South Africa, only certain foods may come with you:

  • Canned goods

  • Sauces and spices

  • Baked goods

  • Fully processed meat products

Raw meat, dairy, fresh fruit, and vegetables are not permitted across the border.

For everything else, we are here. Our deli in Maun is stocked with a wide range of products that meet all regulations, so you can arrive with peace of mind and leave with provisions that are ready for the road.
